A few things
worth knowing.
What exactly does Utter do?
Utter is a desktop voice dictation app. Hold a shortcut, speak, and release. It transcribes your speech, cleans up the text, and pastes it at your cursor in the app you’re using.
Does it work in the apps I already use?
Utter inserts text at your active cursor in ordinary text fields. That includes email, documents, chat apps, AI tools, and your browser. No plugin is needed for each app. Some protected fields can restrict pasting.
Is it actually free?
Start with 2,000 words a week, with no account required. Your allowance resets every Monday. Local speech engines and built-in cleanup are included. Optional cloud engines use your own API keys and may incur provider charges.
Does my audio leave my device?
With the default local engines, audio stays on your device. If you choose cloud transcription, audio is sent to your selected provider. AI cleanup uses Apple’s on-device model when available, or sends text to Claude if you configure your API key. You choose which features to enable.
Can I use it offline?
Yes, after setup. Apple’s on-device engine works on supported Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 26. Older supported Macs and Windows use local Whisper after a model download. Local Whisper downloads a model for your selected languages.
Which computers are supported?
The current download is for Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13 or later. The Apple speech engine requires macOS 26; earlier supported versions use local Whisper. Windows and Intel Mac installers are not available yet.
How do I install the Mac beta?
Download the latest test build, open the DMG, and drag Utter into Applications. Launch Utter from Applications. This build has a local testing signature; it is not Developer ID signed or notarized by Apple. If macOS blocks it, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway for Utter, then confirm. See Apple’s first-launch instructions. If you previously downloaded a build that said “damaged,” download this replacement instead. Utter will guide you through microphone and accessibility permissions when it opens.
